Physical Education at West Heath Primary School
Curriculum Intent
At West Heath Primary School, we believe that Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) play a vital role in the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of every child. Through high-quality learning experiences, pupils are provided with opportunities to apply skills in real-life contexts, developing qualities such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, communication and self-confidence that extend far beyond the classroom and support their wider personal development.
Our aim is for all children to be physically active and to lead happy, healthy lives. This is achieved through a well-planned and inclusive PESSPA strategy that places physical activity at the heart of school life. We strive to ensure that every pupil develops the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to enjoy being active both now and in the future.
At West Heath Primary School, all pupils are supported to make excellent progress in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity. Pupils receive two hours of high-quality PE each week, participate in the Daily Mile, benefit from a broad and enriching extra-curricular programme, and have opportunities to engage in a wide range of festivals, events and competitive sporting opportunities.
Our PESSPA provision supports the whole-school vision of 'Be a Star... Shine Bright' and is underpinned by our commitment to developing the whole child. Through a Head, Heart and Hands approach, pupils are encouraged to become confident thinkers (the thinking me), compassionate and resilient individuals (the feeling me), and physically capable, active learners (the doing me). This holistic approach ensures that all children can flourish, regardless of their background, ability or need, and are equipped with the skills and attitudes required for lifelong participation in physical activity.

Our PE Vision
"At West Heath Primary School, we recognise that every child is unique. Each pupil has their own passions, interests and aspirations and follows their own individual learning journey. Every child has different strengths, areas for development and reasons to be celebrated. Through our Head, Heart, Hands approach, we ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to thrive, achieve and experience success. This is achieved through our holistic approach to Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity.
We recognise that children are still developing and learning; they are not expected to be the finished article. What we do expect is for every child to strive towards their own personal best, embracing challenges and taking pride in their progress. We believe that children are running their own race through life. Our role is to guide, support and inspire them along the way, helping them to develop the confidence, resilience and skills needed to keep moving forward independently.
By nurturing the Head (the thinking me), Heart (the feeling me) and Hands (the doing me), we aim to develop physically literate, confident and motivated young people who are equipped to lead active, healthy and fulfilling lives."
